- Mice - Usually the first evidence of mice infestations are small droppings (black in colour and around 5-8mm in size, similar to a grain of rice), scratching noises may also be heard or damage to building material or food packaging. Infestations of mice can happen very quickly due to their very short gestation period, litters of 5-6 young are born around every 3 weeks after mating, with the new born mice sexually mature at 6-10 weeks. Mice can also survive with little or no intake of water, as they can extract what water they need from what food they eat.
- Brown Rat - (Rattus Norvegicus) or Norway rats are originally native to northern China and are now the main species of rat in the UK and in epedemic numbers in some regions, damage they can cause is far more severe to that of mice due to larger, stronger teeth and a greater appetite - in some cases brown rats have been known to gnaw through mild steel to gain entrance to a property. Brown rats usually breed up to 7 times per year with offspring varying from 2-14, again as with mice the gestation period is around 3 weeks, around 18 hours after giving birth, females experience postpartum estrus and mate again - which has given rise to such large quantities of the species. Rats can live upwards of 2 years in the wild and can carry a number of diseases.
