With all local councils being required to recycle more and more household and commercial waste by the European Union, there is greater pressure on households in particular to recycle their waste through kerbside recycling schemes. New Green Futures is a family owned business established in 2005 to help make recycling easier in the home and the office. We will work with you to take the hassle out of rubbish! Why Recycle? Recycling saves energy, landfill space and natural resources. If properly organised home recycling requires a trivial amount of time, yet offers substantial benefit to the homeowner as well as the environment Recycling conserves natural resources and reduces waste. It is estimated that in our throwaway society 90% of waste is recoverable. However, only 15% of household waste and 35% of industrial waste was recycled or composted in 2004. Northern Ireland recycles at two-thirds the levels of England and Europe and will face hefty fines (£150 per tonne of waste) if we do not comply with the EU Landfill Directive 1995 to reduce the level of municipal waste sent to landfill sites to 35% of 1995 levels by 2020. We will see the impact of this on our council rates. Northern Ireland is well behind other areas in the management of waste. Every fortnight, we throw away enough to fill the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. If we carry on generating the same level of waste our cities, towns and countryside will be literally a waste land. In addition many of the raw materials we take for granted - oil, gas, coal, bauxite - will be exhausted. This will be our legacy to our children and to their children. Some say that by not recycling, reusing and reducing our consumption of these raw materials and consumer products now we are "stealing the future from our children"!
