Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and manual treatment which, by correcting joint and tissue abnormalities to restore physical and mental well-being, makes it easier for a person's body to function normally and use its own recuperative powers more effectively.
Osteopaths are skilled in assessing the mechanics of the whole body, especially the spine. During a consultation an osteopath will take a detailed medical history from the patient followed by a careful examination. From there a diagnosis will be made of what is causing the symptoms and suitable treatment will be given. They use a variety of manipulative techniques, most extremely gentle, to restore a state of balance and ease to the movement and function of the spine, to reduce pain and discomfort and to encourage the body to function better.
Cranial Osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that uses very gentle manipulative pressure to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body, including the head. With cranial osteopathy the osteopath works with the "involuntary motion" of the body. This is a very subtle rhythmical shape change that is present in all body tissues. The skull is made up of 26 bones which are intricately joined in such a way that during the rhythmical cycle of involuntary motion, the skull can actually change shape very slightly to accommodate the normal involuntary motion of the brain inside. Impacts to the head can block or disrupt this movement. This can cause a wide variety of problems both in the head and elsewhere in the body.
