Broomcottage is a family run business headed by Deborah Anderson. Deborah moved to a small holding in Greyabbey, Northern Ireland three years ago in search of “The Good Life” where she started producing as much of the family's own fruit, vegetables, eggs and meat products as possible- following organic farming principles. Part of this ethos was to follow in her father's footsteps of beekeeping. Deborah has studied aromatherapy and the therapeutic use of essential oils for many years, and has combined this knowledge with the health giving benefits of beeswax and honey, to produce a range of natural handcrafted soaps, cosmetics and natural beeswax candles. After discovering the benefits of using these products to manage her own skin condition, Deborah established her business Broomcottage, in 2006 producing a range of soaps, hand cream and lip balm.
Many commercial soaps are detergents containing harsh chemicals, cheap synthetic fragrances and animal fat- lacking the main ingredient which moisturises the skin known as glycerine; this can be removed by many commercial soap producers. Broomcottage soaps are produced using a blend of vegetable oils and beeswax and are made using traditional methods and cured for four weeks to produce soap with a ph of between 7 and 8, which is very gentle on the skin. The soap made at Broomcottage retains the naturally occurring glycerine to moisturise the skin.
Beeswax is one of the oldest ingredients in cosmetic preparations having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, anti-bacterial, skin softening and elasticity enhancing properties. Beeswax rarely causes allergic reactions, is useful for sensitive and delicate skin and has similar protective properties as lanolin. At Broomcottage the soaps are made using local beeswax and beeswax sourced in Northern Ireland- honey is also used extensively in the cosmetic range. The products have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, which helps in the healing and sterilising of damaged skin, promoting the growth of new skin. The honey used in the soaps we make is also produced at Broomcottage.
