| About David Steele |
David has a 2.1 Honours degree in Zoology from the University of Aberdeen and prior to becoming freelance in 2000 had accumulated 12 years experience working as a contract ecologist in Ireland and GB for a variety of organisations, including Scottish Natural Heritage, Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, British Trust for Ornithologhy and BirdWatch Ireland.
During six years as a fieldworker for RSPB in Northern Ireland David gained detailed knowledge of the status, distribution and ecology of birdlife in the Province, and in particular he aquired specialist knowledge of the status and conservation issues for all bird species of Conservation Concern in Northern Ireland. This knowledge is placed in the context of his extensive experience of birds and related conservation issues within wider all-Ireland and GB frameworks. David has carried out work in every county of Northern Ireland, in Donegal and Mayo in the Republic of Ireland, and also in Shetland and throughout northern and western mainland Scotland.
David has been involved in a wide range of ornithological survey work covering all species groups and habitats. He has extensive experience of all the main generic bird survey methodologies, notably Breeding Birds Survey, Common Birds Census, Moorland Birds Survey, Breeding Wader Survey and Wetland Birds Survey (WEBS). He has also worked on a wide variety of more specialist surveys for species as diverse as Red-throated Divers, Black Guillemots, terns, skuas, Golden Plovers, Red Grouse, Hen Harriers and Merlins. He has extensive experience of further specialist methods for surveying seabirds at sea and experience of aerial surveys of inshore marine areas. He also has extensive experience of identifying and recording cetaceans in European waters, and a good general knowledge of other fauna in GB and Ireland, particularly butterflies and dragonflies.
David is currently actively involved in the Irish birdwatching scene. He is a member of the Northern Ireland Birdwatchers Association Records Committee and a co-compiler of the annual Northern Ireland Bird Report. David has travelled widely abroad and has particular experience of birds and habitats in south Asia, sub-Saharan Arfrica and Europe.
