After working in a teaching and a nursing environment, and assisting at various sporting events I decided to proceed through the various levels of first aid certification, through to the instructor/assessor level. In conjunction with this it seemed a natural progression to form Afa-ni.

Afa-ni is about teaching first-aid skills to a wide range of people, enabling them to cope with emergencies at home, in the workplace or in the community. First-aid provision in any of the above situations, saves lives, preventing any minor problems becoming major ones and also fulfils the legal obligations outlined by the Health and Safety Executive of Northern Ireland (particularly in the workplace).

Afa-ni, places an emphasis on practical skills and also using various learning/teaching methods to enable the student to gain confidence to cope with an emergency situation.

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations N.I 1982 employers have an obligation "to provide adequate first-aid provision for their workforce, with appropriate equipment." Industries need to have first-aid cover.

Individuals of all ages and abilities who want a basic knowledge of emergency care may want to undertake a first-aid course. Parents, especially new parents and carers are particularly likely to consider undergoing a course. Schools, nurseries and childcare providers would be keen on courses tailored towards first-aid qualification so that they are prepared for any accidents that may arise. Sports instructors will need to have a first-aid certificate.
